Random Acts of Kindness

With another week's passing, I have for you a fresh list of kind souls whom I have come across in my travels.

In Kamadan, it appears that the Dye Merchant was unclear in her requirements, and many citizens were returning to Kamadan with only a single swamp flower instead of the two that Barlom required. The good Ne Ralas spent many hours aiding other travelers in the completion of that quest; he harvested swamp flowers and generously presented them as a gift to citizens in need.

In the Sunspear Great Hall Joshua Lazaran helped a Sunspear climbing the ranks find a way to check his progress. This let the Sunspear know how much further he had to go to acquire his next rank, thus allowing him to plan his future course of action. Also, Pippin Swift Arrow gave pointers on completing a difficult quest to a confused adventurer.

Within the dark halls of House Zu Heltzer, Fiona Fleur helped citizens find uses for the extra items they had found out in the Echovald Forest. She directed these citizens to a collector who desired such items, and in turn, made their days brighter. She and a friend named Snotty Kid also handed out quite a bit of crafting material to those in need.

Over in Kamadan, Shalot Juspar taught a fellow Sunspear how to perform a special dance. The two of them entertained the city for some time with their fine moves! I also saw Drizzt Wledig offering free beverages to any who desired a bit of alcoholic refreshment.

While in the bustling city of Lion's Arch, both Queen Of Raah and Jeremy Stark were helping travelers gain the aid of Olias. Their directions and help allowed many citizens in the area to acquire the services of that oft sought-after Necromancer Hero.

For these acts, and many others, you have my thanks.

Winning Emblems Added to Selection

If you recall, the Guild Emblemers of Cantha and Tyria held a contest recently to bring Elonian-themed emblems into their list of offerings. The winners were announced a few weeks ago, but the Emblemers waited to present the emblems to their Elonian counterparts before adding them to their selection. I attended a recent meeting of Guild Emblemers to which the emblem designers from Elona were invited for the first time. The Elonian representatives were delighted with the emblems offered by their Tyrian and Canthan counterparts, and I must say that I agree with the universal praise for these new emblem choices.

The Guild Emblemer from Kamadan, being a rather comedic soul, expressed a particular liking for Isabeau Suro's entry. This aerodynamic swine, while not particularly Elonian, per se, will no doubt find its way on the backs of light-hearted soldiers across all regions and realms of our world. Other emblems create equally likeable representations of Elona and they, too, are sure to be popular.

The Emblemers of Elona were quite pleased with all of the entries, and proclaimed that they will begin offering them very soon. If you wish to view these new emblems, please pay a visit to your local Guild Emblemer and inquire.

Priests of Balthazar Offer Double Arena Rewards

The Priests of Balthazar have announced that for the next few days, those who participate in Arena battles will receive double Balthazar's faction. It is their hope that this extra encouragement will bring new challengers to the arenas, and in turn, increase travel to the Battle Isles as a whole.

Along with the increase in faction, those who win ten matches in a row will begin earning double Gladiator Points. This is good news indeed for those seeking that most challenging title. Many combatants are already in the Battle Isles, perfecting their strategy in order to improve their chances of seizing victory this weekend.

This is not the first time the Priests of Balthazar have increased the reward for those participating in Arena combat. And combatants who took advantage of a similar event a few months ago are ecstatic to once again have a chance to reap exceptional rewards for engaging in an activity they already enjoy. Even those unmotivated by the reward are pleased to see an increase in the number of challengers the reward brings to the Arenas. One such veteran mentioned "I love these events! Whenever the Priests of Balthazar increase the reward there are always twice as many people for me to kill!"

If you enjoy Arena combat, or if you are in search of a way to earn faction quickly, make your way to the Battle Isles for some Arena combat this weekend!

[Guild Wars News] PvP Primer: Premades

posted on 8 November 2006
This week's PvP Primer section presents information on using the default PvP-only characters. Current with the release of Nightfall, this article will be a valuable read for those who are making a start with PvP play.
Parts of the article:
PvP Primer: Using a Default PvP-only Character

For a long time after the original launch of Guild Wars, the PvP-only character creation process has offered premade templates as a choice. These templates had eight skills from primary and secondary professions, preset attributes, and elite skills. New players could pick one of these templates and begin PvP play immediately, with no unlocks.
After the recent update, this template system has changed as part of an overall effort to streamline the character creation process. Now, when you make a PvP-only character, you decide the primary profession during the creation. Each primary profession has six default skills and a pre-set attribute-point spread. For example, if you make a Warrior, you'll have six Warrior skills to use, even if you haven't unlocked anything.
This article lists each of the primary profession's starting skills, tips for playing those professions, and suggested skills to unlock. Each of these default Skill Bars includes a self-heal and Resurrection Signet. After you've made your character, you can change the secondary profession, add skills, craft armor and equipment, and save it all to a template.

Warrior
Sever Artery
Warrior - Swordsmanship - Attack
Adrenaline: 4
Activation: 0
Recharge: 0
Attack. If this attack hits, the opponent begins Bleeding for 5..25 seconds, losing Health over time.
Skills
Sever Artery, Gash, Final Thrust, Charge, Healing Signet, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Frenzy, Rush, and/or Sprint. Frenzy increases your damage and adrenaline gain, while Rush or Sprint lets you cancel Frenzy if you take too much damage.

Ranger
Apply Poison
Ranger - Wilderness Survival - Preparation
Energy: 15
Activation: 2
Duration: 24
Recharge: 12
Preparation. For 24 seconds, foes struck by your physical attacks become Poisoned for 3..15 seconds.
Skills
Distracting Shot, Apply Poison, Barbed Trap, Troll Unguent, Escape, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Savage Shot and Whirling Defense. Savage grants you an additional interrupt, which is especially important if Distracting Shot misses. Use Whirling Defense when Escape is recharging so you can avoid damage and reduce the chance of getting interrupted while you Trap.

Monk
Word of Healing [Elite]
Monk - Healing Prayers - Spell
Energy: 5
Activation: 0.75
Recharge: 4
Spell. Heal target other ally for 16..80 Health. Heal for an additional 15..100 Health if that ally is below 50% Health.
Skills
Orison of Healing, Word of Healing, Healing Touch, Mend Ailment, Remove Hex, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Reversal of Fortune, Signet of Devotion, and Healing Breeze. Reversal adds flexibility to your damage prevention options, and lets you quickly heal yourself. Signet of Devotion saves you Energy, and Healing Breeze helps counter Health Degeneration. Replace Resurrection Signet, as Monks often don't PvP with a resurrect ability.

Necromancer
Life Siphon
Necromancer - Blood Magic - Hex Spell
Energy: 10
Activation: 2
Duration: 12..24
Recharge: 2
Hex Spell. For 12..24 seconds, target suffers -1..3 Health degeneration, and you gain +1..3 Health regeneration.
Skills
Parasitic Bond, Life Siphon, Plague Signet, Vampiric Gaze, Faintheartedness, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Barbed Signet and Mark of Subversion. The Signet gives you another way to do damage without using any Energy, while Mark of Subversion lets you interrupt healers and other characters who cast spells on their allies.

Mesmer
Energy Surge [Elite]
Mesmer - Domination Magic - Spell
Energy: 10
Activation: 2
Recharge: 20
Spell. Target foe loses 3..8 Energy. For each point of Energy lost, that foe and all foes in the area take 10 damage.
Skills
Power Spike, Energy Burn, Energy Surge, Drain Enchantment, Ether Feast, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Power Drain and Diversion. For another interrupt, choose Power Drain. It gives you Energy, letting you fuel constant use of Diversion and other skills.

Elementalist
Lightning Surge [Elite]
Elementalist - Air Magic - Hex Spell
Energy: 10
Activation: 2
Duration: 3
Recharge: 10
Hex Spell. After 3 seconds, target foe is knocked down and struck for 14..100 lightning damage. This Spell causes Exhaustion.
Skills
Lightning Strike, Lightning Orb, Lightning Surge, Aura of Restoration, Glyph of Lesser Energy, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Blinding Flash and Air Attunement. Blind those annoying Warriors or Dervishes that like to follow you around, and save Attunement for a cover Enchantment so Aura of Restoration doesn't get stripped from you.

Assassin
Twisting Fangs
Assassin - Critical Strike - Attack
Energy: 10
Activation: 0
Recharge: 15
Attack. Must follow an off-hand attack. If it hits, Twisting Fangs strikes for +10..20 damage and struck foe suffers from Bleeding and Deep Wound for 5..20 seconds.
Skills
Leaping Mantis Sting, Jungle Strike, Twisting Fangs, Shadow Refuge, Aura of Displacement, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Way of the Fox and Dark Escape. If you have a target you can't hit, try Way of the Fox to outfox their defensive ability. And Dark Escape comes in handy if you need to retreat and heal.

Ritualist
Shadowsong
Ritualist - Communing Magic - Binding Ritual
Energy: 15
Activation: 5
Duration: 30
Recharge: 45
Binding Ritual . Create a level 1..6 Spirit. The Spirit's attacks cause Blindness for 1..6 seconds. This Spirit dies after 30 second[s].
Skills
Spirit Light, Mend Body and Soul, Pain, Wanderlust, Shadowsong, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Boon of Creation and Weapon of Warding. The Boon of Creation Enchantment helps you manage Energy and stay alive when you perform Binding Rituals, while Weapon of Warding slows down pesky melee attacks and counters Health degeneration.

Paragon
Barbed Spear
Skills
Barbed Spear, Blazing Spear, Anthem of Fury, Anthem of Flame, Leader's Comfort, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Disrupting Throw and Remedy Signet. Everybody needs a good interrupt, and the Paragon is no exception. Disrupting Throw works well with your skills that cause Conditions. And, in case somebody decides to unkindly Blind you, simply remedy it with Remedy Signet.

Dervish
Wounding Strike
Skills
Twin Moon Sweep, Vital Boon, Wounding Strike, Pious Haste, Zealous Renewal, Resurrection Signet
Suggested Skill Unlocks
Crippling Sweep and Irresistible Sweep. These two attacks help you catch running targets or opponents with a lot of defensive skills.

Customizing your Characters
After you've played with the default setup for each profession, you'll want to experiment with different builds (a build means a combination of skills). These default skills offer a starting place for new PvP players, and should give you the chance to learn the basics behind how each profession works. Keep in mind that when you play with a team, your role may change dramatically, and things that work well in the Training Arenas, the Zaishen Challenge, and Random Arenas may not necessarily work elsewhere. The following PvP Primer articles will help ease you into PvP, starting with basic information about how combat works in the Isle of the Nameless.

Random Acts of Kindness

This has been an extremely busy week! Hundreds of ships have been arriving here in Elona, and Kamadan is packed to capacity. Mad King Thorn's grand celebration also brought many people out to enjoy the festivities, affording me the opportunity to meet quite a few exceptional citizens this past week.

A friend of mine who remains on Shing Jea Island sent me word of a few kind acts that took place there. In Ran Masu Gardens, Ceridwyn Moonblade gave away an assortment of Warrior weapons to those in need. In the late Minister Cho's Estate, Ron Stopable was offering free help on quests to any who could use a hand. In Seitung Harbor, The Last Fallen God was also offering assistance to those less experienced in combat. Tales of your good deeds make my heart long to return to my beloved island home.

Also on Shing Jea Island, a young Ritualist named Cheroo Kee offered help to a fellow cartographer desperate to find what was missing on his map. She aided him in plotting the route to the last remote location in Cantha he had missed, which allowed him to have a full and accurate record of the continent.
Back in Tyria, Captain Band Aid gave away a Superior Strength Rune to a Warrior in need. It is always nice to see people sharing items rather than selling them, for not all citizens have the funds to purchase the tools and equipment they need for battle.

Over in Kamadan, Karie Moonwhisper led an adventurer who possessed a broken toy in the direction of Mahk, the local toy maker. I can only hope Mahk was able to repair it and return it to its functioning state. Also, Silver Eagle instructed a new recruit about how to locate Koss in order to gain that good Warrior's assistance in future adventures.

I also came across a few fine citizens helping people get the most possible enjoyment out of the Halloween event. Aggressive Nature told confused citizens where the find sentient roots for the Mad King's collectors. Rangerr Godd shared his knowledge of the Mad King's games, helping other players survive the challenge. Both of these fine citizens helped others gather the most treats possible during Mad King Thorn's visit.

Pomnuria Ignasia, Mikel Zen, Tnagnev Eht Navllyk, Helena Manning, Seshiro Kitan and Big F L Y all acted as honorary heralds, announcing to the citizens when Mad King Thorn would return. This helpful service allowed the many adventurers attending the celebration to return to their normal tasks between the king's visits.
I would also like to give a very special thanks to an outstanding individual. He may have killed us all many times over, he may be all but unbeatable at "Rock, Paper, Scissors," and his jokes could bring tears of despair to the happiest of clowns, but, nevertheless, I feel I must thank Mad King Thorn for visiting us again this year in Tyria and Elona. He must have given out at least a million items during the event! What a giving spirit! I must give the good king a tip of my Wicked Hat and my wishes for him to have a pleasant trip back to the Mists. Long live... err, long prosper Mad King Thorn of Tyria!

Thank you all for your fine displays of kindness. I shall continue to look for acts of selfless giving and generous assistance in the future. May the Five Gods watch over you throughout your adventures.

The Mad King Has Left the Building

Calm is returning to Kamadan and Lion's Arch, and the pumpkin-wearing crowds are returning to their normal lives. The Mad King has departed, for now, and the masses are reveling in the many gifts he left behind in his lunatic wake. Do not be shocked if you continue to see walking, talking—even dancing—candy corn over the next few weeks. Some do not wish to say goodbye to the Halloween spirit just yet.

The gifts Mad King Thorn distributed have turned into quite a valuable commodity. Many citizens would never dream of handing over their hard-earned treats, but those who are willing to do so are making a killing in the market. It can be expected that the price of these items will continue to rise as supplies diminish, so if you desire to acquire a few extra Halloween treats—perhaps some Squash Serum or Witch's Brew—now would be the time to trade for them.

While these gifts are special, most citizens are buzzing about the spectacularly spooky headgear the Mad King gave out in both of his party locations. In Lion's Arch, following the tradition of years past, Mad King Thorn handed out a fabulous "Furious Pumpkin Crown," while in Kamadan, he presented party attendees with a new type of headgear—the "Wicked Hat." These prized possessions have earned a permanent place in the populace's backpacks, and they no doubt will be brought out at many social events in the future. As one citizen stated, with obvious pride, "Our Wicked Hats and our Furious Pumpkin Crowns are signs that we were there when the Mad King descended on the city. Not only did we not flee in fear, we managed to survive a barrage of painful jokes to get the rewards. In fact, some of us bested King Thorn at a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors for extra treats!"

We must now wait another year to see if Mad King Thorn again will grace us with his regal presence during the Halloween Season. As he would say in one of his rare moments of near-lucidity, "Watch for the heralds that mark the sign of my return."

Ships Arrive in Elona; Corsairs Raid Dye Transports

Many of those making their way to Elona have begun arriving at the great port of Kamadan. The Sunspears are scrambling to muster and train as many troops as possible to launch a strike against those attempting to release a powerful, world-threatening evil. It is the Sunspears' most fervent hope that, upon removal of those responsible for this atrocity, peace will once again return to Elona.

The rapid influx of new recruits has lead to prolonged hours for the trainers, causing many of them to exhibit less-than-patient behavior. Tactician Haj was in a bit of hot water earlier in the week, when he pushed a recruit named Jahfoh off of the observation platform when she wanted to quit the training session. Jahfoh was unhurt, and actually found it a bit of humorous. Forgiving the potential harm to her person, she has opted to remain at Haj's training area, regaling new recruits with the story, and foretelling Haj's impatience with those who do not finish that which they start.

Predicting the huge demand for dye—what with many students desiring to customize their standard-issue garb—Elonian dye traders have put in massive orders for their stores. Hoping to properly meet this demand, dye traders from around the world sent their excess supply to Elona. Unfortunately, much of that dye was apprehended by corsair raiders, and has since been sold on the black market to the many degenerates and fiends with whom the corsairs associate. Also, since those ruffians are less careful about protecting their supplies than the more civilized organizations prove to be, many confused beasts and monsters across Elona have acquired much of the stolen dye, apparently drawn in by the aroma and mistaking it for something edible. Luckily, this gives new recruits in Elona the opportunity to reclaim some of this stolen dye.

If you have not already set sail for Elona, I strongly implore you to immediately book passage. You won't regret it. The Sunspears are preparing for all-out war—if it comes to that—and reports suggest that the Kournans are also mustering every available troop and guard, preparing for what they feel is an inevitable end to the peace in Elona. There are also atrocious allegations suggesting a far greater and far more dangerous threat on the horizon. Elona needs you, brave citizens. Its fate truly rests in your hands, and you must heed its call, lest we all fall!
